Your Works Are Wonderful
Reflect with me for a minute on what Scripture says about our bodies: “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Ps. 139:13–14, emphasis mine).
Did you see that? “Your works are wonderful.” What work is the psalmist talking about here? Not works of art that hang in some museum but the masterful work God did when He created us. We need to honor and respect the marvelous creations God entrusted to us. In addition to being faithful stewards, we need to be gracious. So many times I hear women downplay or even refuse compliments. “Your hair looks great” is met with a rejection such as, “Oh, it’s a mess. I just can’t get it to do anything.”
I heard myself do the same thing when filming Switched for Christmas. My costar Mark told me how great I looked in my plum-colored dress, and I started to say, “Ugh, well, I don’t feel very good in it. I’m bloated, I feel gross—” Then I stopped midsentence and said, “I’m sorry, my husband has told me it’s unattractive to not take a compliment, so let me start over. Thank you!” He smiled and said sweetly that my husband was right and I should take the compliment because it was true.
We deflect compliments or try to undercut them by pointing out our faults. Friends, I agree with Val and Mark: I don’t think this is a healthy habit. A simple thank you and a smile is the perfect response. Accepting a compliment is kind. Refusing one is like refusing a gift.
